Au hasard des rues.

              

Les portraits et les vues de Ho Chi Minh ville composent l'essentiel de mes carnets de croquis. Je dessine par envie, rarement sous la torture, souvent pour une fille, parfois pour des amis. A mesure des rencontres, les pages se noircissent de traits, de ratures. Avec le temps, elles se tachent, se détachent et mes livres de voyages finissent par ressembler à de vieux acteurs fatigués aux rides pleines d'histoires.

Hello Daniel. You're allowed to speak english, of course! Thank you for your message. I am still in France, trying to hook an editor in order to publish my next comic book. I am touched, you did recognize the place where you used to drink before. In that narrow street, I can smell the bread cooking behind as well! Hope to see you there again!

I've had a soda or two at this place more than once. I can still smell the bread being cooked and sent off for delivery on bikes, and still remember how nice it was to find a shady spot away from the Saigon sun--and from a lot of the peddlers as well.

Hope you're doing fine Max! It's great seeing some of the old drawings again.

Oh, I almost forgot: My favorite part of the drawing besides the memories that it recalls? The Vietnamese couple schmoozing in the park. Without them, the "essence" of what a Saigon park is and what they are for (besides walking feverishly) would have been left out.

Anyway, I'll talk to you later. Are you still in France? And am I allowed to speak in English on this page? Seeing it next to the flowing French words will not be a pretty site--but of course anything is prettier than an American speaking French. :-)

Elle en a les yeux, elle est serveuse et elle est vietnamienne... Pourtant ce n'est pas de la bière, c'est du canada dry. Tout ça fait mousser, mais ce n'est pas Hien.

Je reconnais "serveuse", c'est ma cousine, Hien, dite aussi Bé Bai, ou "Bébé n°7" (on nomme les gens par des numéros selon le rang dans la fratrie, au Vietnam).
Ah, mon cher Max, à défaut de coucher avec elle tu as au moins réussi à la dessiner !

Etrange, cette série : l'idée de l'entassement hétéroclite, puis ce portrait si net qu'il en est inquiétant.
